The Housing Choice Voucher Program

The Housing Choice Voucher Program (often called Section 8) helps people with low incomes afford safe, stable housing. The program is funded by the federal government and managed locally by housing agencies like Bath Housing Authority.

If you qualify, you receive a voucher that helps pay part of your rent. You can choose your own apartment or home, as long as the landlord agrees to participate and the unit meets basic safety standards.

Most households pay about 30% of their income toward rent, and the voucher covers the rest up to a set limit.

Because demand is high, there is often a waiting list. When vouchers become available, they are offered to eligible applicants based on local preferences and program rules.

The program is designed to give people choice, flexibility, and a better chance to find housing that fits their needs.
